If you are looking for additional support for yourself, a family member or a friend there are many support groups and centres around the country. A few of them are listed here. If you know of others, please send us details so we can add them to the list. You can find out more about them by visiting their websites or giving them a call.

NATIONAL

Maggie’s Centres

Maggie’s Centres are located over England, Wales and Scotland and offer support, practical help and complementary therapies. You can find your local Maggies Centre at maggiescentres.org

Breast Cancer Care

Breast Cancer Care runs events specifically targeted at those with advanced breast cancer – ‘Living with secondary Cancer’. These take place regularly at various locations around England, Wales and Scotland. You will find a full list of these events as well as many others that you may find helpful at breastcancercare.org.uk

Breast Cancer Care also run a telephone helpline on 0808 800 6000 (Monday to Friday – 9am to 4pm and Saturday – 9am to 1pm)

Macmillan

Macmillan offers support in many different ways across the country:

  • Macmillan support line: 0808 808 00 00 (Monday to Friday – 9am to 8pm)
  • Local support groups: you can search for local groups using your postcode
  • Local information and support centres: you can search for a local centre using your postcode
  • Macmillan nurses: the nurses specialise in different areas and your GP, consultant, district nurse or hospital ward sister can make a referral for you. The Macmillan Support Line will help you if you need more information.
Breast Cancer Haven Support Centres

Breast Cancer Haven is a national charity offering free emotional, physical and practical support to anyone affected by breast cancer, from its centres across the country. You can find Breast Cancer Haven service locations at breastcancerhaven.org.uk

Shine Cancer Support

Shine supports adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s diagnosed with any type of cancer. Many of the women they support have advanced breast cancer. You can find details of their networks at shinecancersupport.org

The Inflammatory Breast Cancer Network UK

The Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) Network can be found on Facebook. Their main aim is to educate about IBC and promote and fund IBC research in the UK, but they also offer support through their Facebook page.

The Fountain Centre

The Fountain Centre is a charity for cancer patients, their families and carers located in the St Luke’s cancer unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. They offer advice, counselling and a huge range of complementary therapies, in a calming and relaxed atmosphere.

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by cancer. Their support centres in Essex, London and Hertfordshire are vital in helping people living with cancer. The centres offer a range of complementary therapies to patients in an environment of peace and tranquility, including counselling, reflexology, aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage and support groups. The centres are for patients with all types of cancer at all stages, whether newly diagnosed or longer term, throughout and after completion of treatment.

South East Cancer Help Centre

SECHC aims to give any person affected by cancer an opportunity to explore ways which may help them to cope with their situation. The Centre aims to respect and support them in the choices they make and to provide individual and group support, complementary therapies and information within a friendly, caring environment. These services have local NHS recognition.

The Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Tuesday evenings 5pm to 8pm, and Saturday mornings 9am to 1pm. Therapy sessions are also provided at Croydon University Hospital in association with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Saint Barnabas Day Hospice & Education Centre

Offers Day Therapy with a range of clinical, emotional and spiritual support services in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. You will have access to a team of nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, health and rehabilitation support workers, chaplains and volunteers. This service can be accessed at any stage and can provide you, your family and friends with support and advice.

You can refer yourself to Day Therapy by contacting them on 0300 020 0694. Any healthcare professional involved in your care can also make a referral on your behalf.

Robert Horrell Macmillan Day Therapy Centre

The Robert Horrell Macmillan Day Therapy Centre has a multi-professional team which provide a range of treatments, advice, activities and support structures for patients who are living with cancer or other progressive illness.

Set in spacious grounds, the Robert Horrell Macmillan Day Therapy Centre was opened with the aim of providing a safe, supporting and caring environment for both patients and carers. The Centre is opposite the entrance to the haematology/oncology unit at the rear of the City Hospital site.

The Mulberry Club is a support group in Lymington, Hampshire for those living with advanced cancer and those who are supporting them. They hold monthly drop-in sessions at the Coates Centre, which is situated in the grounds of Oakhaven Hospice. (The centre is, however, entirely separate from the hospice.)
